Freeman Vineyards, located in the Hilltops region of New South Wales, is a small, family-run winery established in 1999. Positioned at 560 metres above sea level, the vineyard benefits from well-drained soils made up of granite, sand, and silt. Expanding in 2004, the vineyard now covers 200 hectares, growing a mix of red and white varieties including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, and several lesser-known European grapes like Furmint and Harslevelu. Alongside producing wines under its own label, Freeman also supplies quality fruit to other wineries in the region.
Founder Brian Freeman, a former professor of Wine Science, has focused on Italian-inspired wines. Freeman Vineyards is home to Australia’s only plantings of Rondinella and Corvina, used in their signature FREEMAN Secco, which draws influence from Italy’s Amarone and Ripasso styles. Other highlights include FREEMAN Robusta, made from partially dried Corvina grapes, and FREEMAN Fiano, rated highly by critics. The winery also produces small-batch reds like Tempranillo, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting both tradition and innovation in winemaking.
The Cellar Door at Freeman Vineyards is open by appointment, offering a seated wine tasting experience. Guests can sample the range of wines while enjoying a complimentary cheese and salumi plate. Tastings are limited to a maximum of eight adults, providing a relaxed and focused environment to learn about the wines and the vineyard’s approach to winemaking.
