Moppity Vineyards, established in 1973, is a renowned winery located near Young in Southern New South Wales, part of the Hilltops region. With a vineyard spanning 170 acres, Moppity boasts some of the oldest vines in the area. The vineyard's diverse terrain and soil types contribute to the distinctiveness of its wines. Renowned wine critic James Halliday has praised Moppity's wines for their quality. In 2004, Jason and Alecia Brown acquired the vineyard, driven by their passion for creating world-class Shiraz and other varietals. Their vision focused on producing expressive, medium-bodied, and elegant wines, contrasting with the traditional "blockbuster" styles of Australian wine prevalent at the time. Their dedication to understanding and responding to the unique characteristics of their site has been crucial in realizing the vineyard's potential.
Moppity's terroir is notable for its similarities with the soil of Coté Rôtie in Northern Rhone and its rare high altitude of 600m, a feature shared with less than 1% of Australian viticultural land. This elevation results in a balance of warm days and cool nights, enhancing flavor concentration while maintaining lower sugar/alcohol and higher natural acid levels in the grapes. This unique environment allows for the production of balanced and refined wines. Over the years, the Browns have expanded their varietal range, experimenting with Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, and Sangiovese, in addition to their award-winning Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot, Riesling, and Chardonnay. Their approach reflects a commitment to exploring the diversity of wine styles and pushing the boundaries of winemaking in Australia.
