Rare Hare Wines is a boutique winery on the Mornington Peninsula, producing cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its 11-hectare LL Vineyard in Merricks North. Established in 1989, the vineyard is carefully managed with a focus on hand-tending and improving viticultural practices to ensure the best expression of its site. Since 2018, the vineyard has been dedicated solely to the region’s flagship varieties, with all wines crafted on-site by winemaker Geraldine McFaul.
Rare Hare is more than just a winery—it offers a relaxed and inviting space for wine lovers to explore its range. The estate’s approach to winemaking highlights the elegance and complexity of Mornington Peninsula fruit, creating wines that showcase the influence of the maritime climate and diverse soil profiles. Alongside its estate-grown wines, Rare Hare also produces an extended range, further exploring the potential of the Mornington Peninsula.
The Rare Hare Wines Cellar Door is open daily for tastings, offering a casual yet engaging experience. Guests can sample current-release wines at the tasting bar, with knowledgeable staff on hand to guide them through the estate’s range. The relaxed setting allows for a quick tasting or a more in-depth exploration of limited-release and museum wines.
For those looking to enjoy a more leisurely visit, the Rare Hare Lawn provides a laid-back space to unwind with a bottle of wine and a charcuterie box. The estate also features a wood-fired oven, enhancing the dining experience with a rustic and welcoming atmosphere. Additional tasting experiences include immersive wine explorations, incorporating art and vineyard tours.
