Wine Tasting at Topper's Mountain

Topper's Mountain, named after the Topper brothers, employees of the Wyndham family, is located in the New England region. Established between 1998 and 2002 by Mark Kirkby and his family, the vineyard is known for its unique terroir, resulting from its high elevation on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range and deep volcanic soils. Initially intended to sell most of their harvest to other wineries, Topper’s Mountain started producing wines under their family label in 2005. The vineyard focuses on rare and alternative varieties like Gewürztraminer, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sauvignon Blanc, and Shiraz, selected to complement the unique terroir.

Topper's Mountain has a rich history of viticulture, stemming back to George Wyndham, founder of Wyndham Estate. The New England area, known for its cool climate and iron-rich soils, has produced award-winning wines since the 1850s. Fast forward to today, Topper's Mountain continues this tradition, with Mark and Stephanie Kirkby and their daughters playing a pivotal role in its operation. Their experimentation in the 'Fruit Salad' block, comprising 20 different varieties, led to exciting results and a collaboration with winemaker Mike Hayes, resulting in a successful rebranding of their wines.
