The vineyard's story is one of passion and connection to the land. Richard's ancestral roots in the Tumbarumba district date back to 1858, with a family history intertwined with agriculture and cattle raising. This deep connection to the land is reflected in their approach to viticulture. Elvie and Richard's combined interests in wine and country living led to the establishment of the vineyard, where they now grow premium cool climate grapes and produce fine wines. Their dedication is encapsulated in their 'On the fly' philosophy, balancing vineyard management with full-time jobs and a love for fly fishing in the nearby mountain wilderness.
Mount Tumbarumba Vineyard's approach to viticulture emphasises skill, experience, passion, and a deep connection with the environment. The vineyard, located on a northwest-facing slope, benefits from optimal sunlight interception, vital for grape growth and flavor development. The soil, primarily ancient decomposed granite over clay, is not very fertile, which is advantageous for the vines as it directs their energy into producing small quantities of intensely flavored fruit. The vineyard practices sustainable methods, avoiding artificial fertilisers and pesticides, relying instead on natural micro-organisms for soil nourishment. Their focus on terroir ensures that each wine is a true reflection of its environment.
