Craigow Vineyard is one of the pioneering vineyards in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, a region known for its outstanding cool-climate wines. Established in 1989 by Dr Barry Edwards and his family, the vineyard produces elegant Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay, crafted to reflect the terroir of this renowned valley. The growing conditions here are similar to France’s classic cool-climate regions, with long, mild seasons allowing for complex flavour development in the wines.
The land’s history dates back to 1822, when Scottish doctor James Murdoch first cultivated the property, experimenting with fruit trees, grazing livestock, and even growing medicinal poppies. The vineyard continues this legacy of innovation, producing wines that celebrate the rich soils and unique microclimate of the Coal River Valley.
The Craigow cellar door offers a relaxed and intimate setting for tastings, housed in a charming converted farm worker’s cottage. Overlooking the vineyard’s rolling slopes, it provides a scenic backdrop to sample the latest vintages and learn more about the winemaking process.
Guests can enjoy a guided tasting of Craigow’s cool-climate wines, with each variety showcasing the distinct characteristics of the region. The welcoming and knowledgeable team ensures an informative experience, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring Tasmania’s wine country.
