Brothers at War, a winery nestled in the Barossa Valley, is the creation of two brothers whose journey into winemaking was influenced by their family's legacy in the region, particularly their father, David Wardlaw, a Barossa winemaking pioneer. Starting in 2013 with a small batch of Shiraz, their venture quickly expanded, symbolising not just a foray into winemaking but also an extension of their sibling rivalry and collaboration. Angus Wardlaw, the Winemaker Director of Brothers at War, embarked on his winemaking journey at an early age, inspired by his family's deep-rooted connection to the industry. His experiences across various wineries, including a significant position in the Clare Valley, have contributed to the establishment of Brothers at War as a distinguished brand within the Australian wine scene. Recognised for his contributions to the industry, including accolades such as 'Up and Coming Riesling Winemaker', Angus's commitment to winemaking excellence has solidified his place among the new generation of Barossa Valley vintners.
Sam Wardlaw, the elder of the two brothers, developed his passion for winemaking through early exposure to the production side of the industry alongside their father. His experiences, particularly at Murray Street Vineyards and later at Kirrihill alongside Angus, have been instrumental in shaping the direction of Brothers at War. Residing in the Clare Valley, Sam continues to contribute to the winery's success while balancing family life, hinting at the possibility of a third generation of Wardlaw involvement in the wine industry.
Chris Alderton, the Vigneron Director, brings a wealth of knowledge in viticulture to Brothers at War, rooted in his upbringing on a family vineyard and formal studies in Environmental Science. His expertise in soils and water management has been crucial in supplying high-quality fruit to the winery, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that defines Brothers at War.
