Poonawatta is a boutique winery in Eden Valley, Barossa’s high country, where six generations of family history have shaped the land and its vineyards. The estate is home to some of the region’s oldest vines, including a Shiraz vineyard planted in 1880 and a Riesling vineyard from 1972. The commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is evident in their vineyard management, with organic soil improvement practices, native revegetation, and minimal intervention winemaking.
The wines are handcrafted in small batches, with estate-grown single vineyard Shiraz, Grenache, and Riesling complemented by regional series wines sourced from other Eden Valley growers. Each vintage is a reflection of the land and its history, offering an authentic taste of this elevated, cool-climate region.
Guests at Poonawatta’s cellar door are welcomed into a relaxed and intimate setting, with stunning views of Eden Valley. Tastings are available by the glass, bottle, or through structured experiences that showcase their single vineyard and old vine wines. The Private VIP Cellar Tasting offers a deep dive into the estate’s history, guided by a member of the Poonawatta family and featuring a selection of museum wines.
For those looking to unwind, the picnic spot under ancient river gums or the seasonal Fire Pit Experience provide unique ways to enjoy the wines. A 'build your own' gourmet platter menu is also available, featuring local Barossa produce to pair with Poonawatta’s wines.
