Mewstone Wines, nestled along the picturesque D’Entrecasteaux Channel in Tasmania, is a testament to the passion and dedication of brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes. Established in 2011 on the site of a former cherry orchard, Mewstone has evolved into a boutique vineyard with a keen focus on producing expressive, single-site wines with minimal intervention. Spanning 5.2 hectares, the vineyard is predominantly planted with Pinot Noir, alongside smaller plots of Chardonnay and Riesling. Winemaker Jonathan Hughes brings a wealth of international experience to the venture, crafting wines under both the Mewstone and Hughes & Hughes labels, the latter allowing for more experimental winemaking practices and the production of unique, low-intervention wines.
The Hughes brothers' commitment to quality and expression of terroir is evident in every bottle, reflecting the unique characteristics of their Tasmanian vineyard. Through careful stewardship of the land and innovative winemaking, Mewstone Wines has established itself as a distinguished name in Tasmania's wine scene, offering varietals such as Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Rosé. Each wine is a celebration of the region's natural beauty and the brothers' dedication to their craft, inviting wine enthusiasts to explore the depth and complexity of Tasmanian wine.
The Mewstone Cellar Door provides an intimate and immersive wine tasting experience, set against the backdrop of the vineyard's stunning natural scenery. Open on weekends, the cellar door offers guided tastings for $25 per person, featuring a rotating selection of 8-9 wines that showcase the seasonal best of Mewstone and Hughes & Hughes. Visitors are hosted by knowledgeable staff members who share insights into the winemaking process and the stories behind each wine. Additionally, guests can enjoy locally sourced seasonal platters, adding a culinary dimension to the wine tasting experience.
To complement the tastings, the cellar door's design and offerings are thoughtfully curated, featuring artwork by Michael Schlitz that captures the essence of both land and sea. This attention to detail extends to the hospitality offered to guests, ensuring a memorable visit. With the space designed to keep tastings intimate, bookings are highly recommended to secure a spot in this exclusive Tasmanian wine journey.
