Established in 1998, First Ridge is a gem of a boutique winery nestled in the stunning landscape of the Mudgee region. Guided by the deft hand of winemaker James Manners, First Ridge boasts a broad spectrum of Italian-style wines, including distinctively flavoursome Rosé, Sparkling Rosé, Fiano, Montepulciano, and Barbera.
With an exceptional reputation for their superior quality wines, First Ridge has become a highly sought-after destination. The vineyard and cellar door are perfectly situated on ancient rocky ridges south of Mudgee, over 500 metres above sea level, offering spectacular views of the Cudgegong Valley - an ideal home for their thriving Italian varietals.
The vineyard was brought to life by John and Helen Nicholas in 1998, under the expert guidance of the globally acclaimed viticulturist, Dr Richard Smart. Richard found the unique characteristics of the vineyard and the climate in Mudgee perfectly conducive to cultivating selected Italian grape varieties.
The First Ridge tasting room, situated on Burrundulla Road in Mudgee, is a marvel of modern design and functionality. Crafted from the innovative fusion of two shipping containers, the open-plan area offers a unique space where visitors can taste premium wines while soaking in the panoramic vineyard views and the sweeping valley extending back into town.
Graeme Salt, Cellar Door Manager, is a passionate about his wine, with a deep appreciation for the nuances of Australian wines. His extensive knowledge and friendly demeanor ensure an engaging, informative, and enjoyable tasting experience. While bookings for tastings are certainly appreciated, walk-ins are also welcome for smaller groups. For larger groups arriving by bus, an appointment made in advance is requested, allowing First Ridge to deliver an exceptional tasting experience tailored to every guest.
