Welland is a historic Barossa vineyard given a new lease on life. Located in Barossa Valley, this century-old vineyard in Nuriootpa was planted in 1923 by one of the region’s founding families, the Kriegs. Once part of a much larger vineyard and orchard, Welland is the last remaining section of this original landscape, saved from redevelopment in 2017 by a group of friends passionate about preserving Barossa’s heritage.
Producing rich, intensely flavoured Shiraz, Welland has supplied premium fruit to some of the Barossa’s most well-known wineries, including Penfolds and Peter Lehmann. Today, these old vines continue to thrive under new ownership, crafting a range of wines that honour the site’s history and unique terroir. With restored trellising, careful irrigation, and a commitment to traditional viticulture, Welland wines are a true expression of the Barossa’s past and future.
Wine tastings at Welland are a unique and immersive experience. Without a traditional cellar door, visitors are instead welcomed into the vineyard itself, where tastings take place on the back of a ute, surrounded by the very vines that produce Welland’s wines. This intimate and rustic setting offers guests a chance to learn firsthand about the vineyard’s rich history while enjoying its carefully crafted wines.

As tastings take place in the vineyard, bookings are required and must be arranged in advance. Visitors are encouraged to reach out a few days before their arrival to secure a tasting experience, weather permitting. Given the hands-on approach at Welland, availability may be limited, but every effort is made to accommodate those interested in discovering this historic vineyard and its wines.
